I was doing some research on third recon and came across this site. My father in law was in third recon during 69 to 70. If im correct he servered in vietnam for 8 months until he was injured during an operation with members of Recon, Special Forces, Rangers and Seals. He received the Army Valorous Unit Citiation for that operation. Not really sure which one it was. He doesnt talk about it much.

I served with 3rd and 1st. Force Recon in 1969-70. Spent 18 months in country and ran most of my long range recon patrols out of Vandigriff combat Base. Most were in the Ashau Valley. My main rear was Con tien and Quang Tre.

A most interesting site!

I made three trips to RVN. Two as an Enlisted Marine and then the final one, as a 2ndLt. As a 2ndLt, I served in 3rd Force in 1969-1970 as the Company Adjutant and the 4th Recon Platoon Leader. In the books that Col Lee and Maj Norton wrote, I'm the Lieutenant Morris ("Lobo") mentioned therein.

It is heartening so see folks such as those in this "version" of 3rd Force so motivated in learning about and recreating the elan and esprit we in the original Company still maintain and revere to this very day! Even more interesting, of course, that those of you who comprise the Company are NOT, for the most part it would seem, American citizens...amazing to me!

I see my dear Friend and Warrior Brother Doc Norton has posted info about both A. Lee and Jimmy Keysacker.

Col Lee is doing quite well in the assisted living facilty...he really seems to like it there! I will be visiting him there in a month or so.

JimmyK's passing, while sad, now finds him in a much better place. He certainly gave it a good go, right up until the bloody end! I spoke with him just a few days before his passing. He was in his normal fine spirits and told me he was ready to "go OSCAR MIKE" and get on with the patrol...! I'm sure he's driving Saint Pete crazy right now (Jimmy will be a Liberty Risk Up There too) but I also know that he's standing his duty well, Up On Heaven's Scenes, where the Streets Are Guarded By United States Marines!

My very best to you all...keep the faith...as in...Semper Fidelis,

Lobo Sendz

Hi one and all,

I've just stumbled across this site whilst researching 3rd force. I saw you guys down at Beltering this year, but had no idea you were doing marine recon! I'm psyched to come down and see you again next year.

I began re-enacting about 10 years ago, primarily focusing on WWII. These days I have a fairly extensive USMC collection (WWII) but have started to focus on Vietnam. I owe this for the most part to one of the previous contributors! Bruce H. "Doc" Norton...Sir, I began reading your book 'Force Recon Diary 1969' earlier this year and it was one of the most compelling, interesting and educating books I've ever read. I was truly stunned by the exploits of the 3rd force and amazed by the men who served. May I just express sincere thanks and best wishes to you and your buddies, hoping you may happen to read this in the future.

And for the guys on this side of the pond, I'll be in touch! You may have a new recruit on your hands.

Semper fi!

Best wishes,

Will Varnam
